Legal Name Change
A legal change of name can only be processed in Alberta for residents of Alberta who are 18 years of age or older. Parents may also apply on behalf of their children.
In some cases, a change or correction to a person's name does not require a legal change of name and may be done through a simpler amendment process. Come in and our staff will help you determine the best way forward.
There are no legal requirements to change a name after marriage in Alberta. A spouse may choose to use their partner's last name or a combination of both names without a legal name change.
Application Process
If your situation requires a formal application, you can get the necessary forms at our office. Once completed, the application must be returned to Beiseker Registries for processing. Applications mailed directly to Vital Statistics will be returned unprocessed.
Once Vital Statistics approves the legal change of name, a Change of Name Certificate will be mailed to you. The entire process takes approximately 8 weeks.
